How To Turn Household Items Into LARP Fashion
LARPing (Live Action Roleplay) has really taken off in the last few years. Whether it’s just a few friends getting together for a round of Dungeons and Dragons or a large community of people that just love to larp, the costumes and outfits that people think up are quite imaginative. Just because a costume looks amazing doesn’t mean it had to cost the owner a pretty penny either. There are many household items that you can Read the rest of this post »
Benedict Cumberbatch: A Brief History of a New Geek Favorite
Who knows if it’s the absurd name or simply tight delivery of zippy one-liners, but there’s something that makes women swoon over Benedict Cumberbatch. His baby blues and intense acting chops have made him a geek culture icon, too. When examining the highlights of his career, it’s hard to know where to begin. From theatre to television to film, Cumberbatch has entranced audiences.
Sheer charm is the name of the game in Sherlock, a BBC favorite. Perhaps after re-launching Doctor Who, the network realized that you can’t go wrong with a scrawny, pale British protagonist. In fact, Cumberbatch once considered auditioning for the role of the Doctor. He later changed his mind, but still joined forces with the show’s head writer, Steven Moffat. Together with Martin Freeman, Moffat and Cumberbatch have brought Sherlock Holmes to life in an adrenaline-fueled modern adaptation.
Sherlock hasn’t been the only collaboration between Cumberbatch and Freeman. In the upcoming Peter Jackson Hobbit trilogy, you can expect to see Freeman playing Bilbo Baggins and Cumberbatch as the menacing Smaug. Perhaps J.J. Abrams was inspired by Jackson’s choice to cast Cumberbatch as a villain, for the actor will also be playing the main antagonist in Star Trek into Darkness, slated for release in 2013. Not much is known about Cumberbatch’s role in the Star Trek sequel. A set photo reveals Cumberbatch fighting with Zachary Quinto’s Spock, but Cumberbatch’s character’s identity is still a mystery. Some lifetime Trekkies are crossing their fingers for Khan, but there’s no way to know for sure.
So whether you’re new to geekdom or shop home insurance companies with hopes to find an affordable policy to protect your Tolkien memorabilia, Cumberbatch is right up your alley. We certainly look forward to more seasons of Sherlock, and eagerly await the reveal of his character in Star Trek into Darkness.
